In his theory of regulating intimate confessions, American professor Sandra Petronio identifies the following criteria of frankness:
1. Motivational. The main reasons why a person can be frank are the following:
• The desire for reciprocity from the one to whom you communicate intimate information;
• Speak out, get rid of the information load, that is, from unnecessary stress;
• The desire to get closer to the interlocutor, people are more frank with those who told them something personal.
• The desire to satisfy self-esteem, if in secret information you appear in a favorable light.
2. Cultural. Disclosure of information depends on generally accepted norms of frankness in a particular culture. In the United States, Brazil, they talk more freely about personal life than in Japan or Norway.
3. Sexual. The boundaries of personal life are determined by men and women in different ways, which leads to many misunderstandings in relationships. Women tend to talk about the personal more than men. Though….
4. Contextual. The decision to disseminate information is influenced by the surrounding social environment and the specific situation. We always evaluate the interlocutor, the potential benefits and possible losses from our frankness with him.
